The regular update

Ok, this is it, you guys, I have approximately 60 minutes of transcription left to do. I have the exam for certification next week. I'm going to be in here, tapping away at this keyboard, finishing the class work and studying for the test.

Yes, I will be at Royal University Meridies on Saturday the 21st, learning to perform my duties as Voice Herald for the Barony of the South Downs.

Yes, I will be at Starbridge workday on Sunday, mowing the grass.

Also, my birthday is coming up at the end of the month; right now, I'm planning to camp out at Café Intermezzo, possibly Saturday afternoon (July 28, that is). I don't know what other people may want to do for my birthday, and I'm sure my mother still cares. If you want to celebrate with me, drop me a line in the comments and I'll figure out how many people I can cram into the time frame.

The kitten has been peeing in a tray in the bathroom, so I've put the bath mat back on the side of the tub. We'll see if she's satisfied with her sand, or if it's about the bath mat.

Charlie has put up a "squirrel-proof" feeder, since the deterrents we were using were ineffective. The smaller birds have already found it good, but the larger birds seem a bit put off with it. However, so far, the squirrels are put off too, so that's good. A couple of them have explored it, but found it wasn't worth the effort.

And yes, while we haven't had the bird feeder up, there have been many more mosquitos.

That's all for now.

Squirrel mafia must die

This morning, when Charlie went out to make coffee, the squirrels had dumped the birdfeeder, found the new encaged feeder hanging by the kitchen window, removed it, opened it, and were sitting around waiting for their scouts to find "the rest of the food" like they weren't all fat and happy now.

It had been a rather pleasant weekend in the backyard, with not only cardinals, robins, thrashers and doves, but wee crested gray birds I can't name, so CUTE. There was only one major squirrel incident when one of them found the bag of seed on the deck and chewed it open. The rest of the time there were only one or two squirrels picking through the leavings. But this morning, that was all over. They keep looking until they find a way to tear up whatever you have, I'm convinced.

Charlie is going all the way out to Stone Mountain to a shop to find anti-squirrel stuff. (This stuff is very sticky. It costs $6 to put it on, $30 to get it OFF!) And we might also SHOOT them. Charlie has become convinced that the low numbers of mosquitos we have this year is partially due to the birds being welcome and frequent visitors to our yard, so he is completely on board with this idea.

The problem is that there are not enough natural predators for the squirrels. The hawks have not taken off with the squirrels as we had hoped. Perhaps our yard is just too small for them to feel confident.

Squirrel mafia may be disbanded

Charlie put spicy szechuan (sp?) oil on the pole that holds the birdfeeder. The birdfeeder has been on the pole all day, not tied shut, unmolested by squirrels. Now, if we can just get the birds to return....

I need a bird icon now. And a pirate icon. I don't feel like looking for or making them, because I have grindage to grind out.
