i'm roughing it here. I started talking about baptists before and got sidetracked...
the point was, when I was a child, I believed. I sought my tiny soul for sins, attempted to not be greedy or proud. I wasn't very much like other christians. I was mystical in my understanding of salvation, buddhist in my determination to avoid attachment to the material plane. I subscribed to an age-of-reason type of belief in intellectual apprehension of virtue. I was always trying to puzzle it out.
I was also fascinated by anything that hinted at the super- or extra-natural. but that's another post.
