Ok, this one time, I was trying to sync my iPhone while downloading my podcasts.  That ended up freezing the always-a-processor-devouring iTunes, which shouldn't really have been surprising.  I've had problems in the past with my CPU rocketing up to 100% usage (Yes, Scotty was growling, "I'm givin' 'er all she's got, Cap'n!") whenever I tried to load/sync iTunes.  I had decided the problem was using an external drive for my memory, but then that external drive crashed, so that's put the kibosh on installing a new internal drive for a while.  Hum-de-hum....

(TL;DR:  iToons bin stickeh and Do Not Want before dis.)

So, THIS week, I'm having another burst of productivity-porn consumption, and was trying to purchase fancy do-rah To-Do lists and time management and word completion software.  All previous software had been free or bought with an iTunes gift card, so it was the first time I was trying to use 'real' money to buy apps.

Earlier this week, the phone said that my paypal account was unauthorized.  I figured it was the additional access had raised a security flag, and I go fix.    So today, I tried to download apps from my desktop computer iTunes, which then repeatedly asked me to authorize my paypal account, and paypal has now authorized iTunes like 9 times, but iTunes gives me the same error message and takes me to the same 'pay method authorization page' every time.

(TL;DR:  Can not haz new apps, because money no talk, no walk.  Iz sad panda.)

Well, I'm a smart bear, I can push the buttons and salivate for the bell.  I went to the AppleCare page and flipped through the troubleshooters.  I decided to go back to the iPhone AppStore and see if it had heard anything from iTunes.  Suddenly, things were odd:  both iTunes and AppStore apps had disappeared.

So I called AppleCare, and I got customer service guy who told me to do exactly what I would have done if I hadn't been hoping for, you know, help:  Restore to factory settings.  I told him I would do that, aware that there would be at least one call back involved, since I still wasn't buying anything new if things stayed like they had been.

Thus, I ended up taking several steps:  First I restored to previous backup.  Previous backup did not restore missing apps.  I kind of expected that.  Second, I restored to original factory settings, checking to make sure missing apps were back.  Then I did a sync to the backup, which redeleted the apps.  Now, this gives me information about how the backup works, but it deepens the mystery of how did the apps disappear in the first place.  Finally, I restore a third time, and this time, I tell it we're starting a 'new' account, and promptly go about (and am ongoing with) restoring my passwords, log-ins, syncs, and pushes.

(TL;DR:  Nuke and Pave--I can still load all the apps that were on my desktop, but that's it.  Naked phone is naked.)

Now... I'm reloading my music, videos, and podcasts.  Then I'll go back to the original problem.  Why is it already 3 in the afternoon?
