Right, another idea: my sister said I should submit sample alphabets/ invitations/ cards to stationery shops so people could hire me to do calligraphy on their wedding invitations and the like.

Ya know, it makes perfect sense to me for a stationery store to have calligraphers available to their patrons. Is anybody doing that already? Or is your sister ahead of her time?

You may wish to contact different organizations that use calligraphy to create certificates or diplomas for people also, like trade schools, colleges, and the like.
