I said earlier that I'd keep you updated in case of movies, but on the spur of the moment, Charlie took me to the 10:30 p.m. showing of Pirates of the Caribbean in Alpharetta on Thursday night.

It sucked. I'm sorry. I liked the costumes, and I was really into the story, except then it failed. A lot. So now I'm glad that I didn't advertise we were going and try to get people to come with us.

Ok, first, there's Jack Sparrow. As a sort of Harlequinesque character, getting people into trouble, being a trickster, he's really likable. However, they start off with him being in "Davey Jones' Locker" which is, in "real" sea lore, supposed to be the depths of the ocean. You know, dead, drowned. And in the Disney version, it's supposed to be tortured. He doesn't seem tortured. It's not even wet. And he's talking to himself. This, for some reason, was not remotely funny. It should have been.

Then there's Voodoo woman chick. There were several moments where I just could NOT believe her accent. And other moments where I could not believe that there wasn't an Ethnic Support Group trying to sue her. But I suppose she was having a hard time talking around all that black goo in her mouth.

Then there's the plot points. No one gives supernatural critters their due. The British Government tries to order them around like there's nothing odd about it.

And how does Jack Sparrow become one of the Nine Pirate Kings again? But if he weren't, we wouldn't have to go to the end of the world for him, would we?

And when the goddess Calypso is released, she causes a maelstrom, and then... nothing. She doesn't reunite with her lover, or toss him into a terrible watery grave. Nothing. She fails to have any interest in the situation that SHE set up.

But of course, this doesn't stop Will from having to do the job anyway.

And after being a feisty, stubborn, strong woman for three films, he leaves Elizabeth on the shore (OF WHERE, FOR GOD'S SAKE) to hang out and wait for him for 10 years. With a heart. In a barnacle-encrusted box. No ship, no crew, no father, no home, no husband, no children. What the fuck are we expecting her to do NOW? You'd think he could at least have dropped her in Kingstown, where there's shopping.

Well, no, but I've fixed that now (You Tube) and I'm still not happy. :P
