I run into this sort of thing on occasion, especially when I'm outside Silly Valley or dealing with unenlightened people outside the valley. They tell me that jeans and tshirts aren't serious and I should "dress for success." I do this daily, except when I have to wear a shirt with buttons because I've been too lazy to do my laundry.
My college girlfriend learned about dressing for success in the "applied" technology when she wore a perfectly-acceptable-for-a-receptionist silk blouse and dress slacks to a customer site where we had to drag cables through the ceiling. She successfully damaged the shirt, and never again came along with mem to a customer site. :)
