If anyone wonders -- not that most of you don't work with me already, apparently -- it's October, so I'm not around much because I'm at the haunted house: Netherworld. Basically, as far as I'm concerned, from Dragon*Con to Halloween is my busy season. If I'm not actually at one of the various events (including the WABE Fall Pledge Drive -- you can pledge online!) I'm seriously on R&R. If I have any energy left, it's spent on family and medical transcription class.

This is the Hell Week:
Today: Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Monday: WABE, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.; Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Tuesday: WABE, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Wednesday: WABE, 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.; tentative SCA meeting, 8-9 p.m.; "Lost," 9-10 p.m. (or Tivo'ed)
Thursday: WABE, 12-3 p.m.; Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Friday: WABE, 12-3 p.m.; Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Saturday: Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Sunday: Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Monday, Oct. 23: Netherworld, 5:30 p.m. till close
Tuesday, Oct. 24: NOTHING! FALL-DOWN-GO-BOOM!

Yeah, hell week is nine days long. And I'm expecting my period any minute now.

So, anyone who feels like offering sympathy, chocolate or backrubs to the heroic [livejournal.com profile] heofmanynames, who feeds the scyllacat and makes sure the furnace comes on and the computer network stays up, start NOW!

Medical transcription class?

How is it going? I'm planning on taking a course at home soon as the funds become available.

Working at home would be so wonderful. I don't have to leave my sanctuary, but I'll still have money to spend.

I do need to give [livejournal.com profile] heofmanynames a call regarding GoU classes, but I've been holding off till we get this whole moving thing squared away. Please tell him I WAS serious the other night in spite of the spirits making my body sway.

I'm working with Career Step, whose certification is accepted by various MT companies, including MedQuist (which Damien works for). After a slow start (I got accepted the same day Charlie and I started dating) I've built up momentum to a couple-or-three hours a day, and it seems to be going well.

The program (on the Internet) builds from the basics to more complex topics, from basic medical word roots to anatomy to specialties. So you're using what you learned as the basis for the next thing. The exercises are relatively small chunks, so it's easy to jump in for just a few minutes, and that adds up! I review by going back to the quizzes periodically and noting if I have missed or forgotten anything, which I'm putting in a file for my midterm review.

After the midterm, I'll be actually transcribing recordings, and then I guess I'll know if I'm really cut out for the work, and start looking into applying for jobs.

Yeah, I want to do it for (I suspect) most of the reasons you do: no more long commutes, expensive business wardrobe, or car expenses. More time to spend with family and on my own turf.

And I passed the message on to Charlie. I'm also twisting his arm on this subject, so we'll see what we work out.

Which of their programs did you get? I've got the paperwork for Career Step, but we're still waiting on the rest of our 2005 tax return. We're also still haggling about which program to get. The least expensive, middle of the road, or the big cahoona that would take half of the money we're waiting for. I'm kind of pushing for the big cahoona, but I may have to compromise.

I think it was the big one: it cost $1300 and change. Do apply for the "scholarship" -- I got 20% off which covered the difference between the course I could afford and the upgrade. It's a simple application, listing your assets and income, and a brief essay, describing your plans and how you feel the course will help.

I didn't know about the scholarship. Thanks!
